Framing Land Governance Issues in Indigenous and Settler Media within Canada

This comparative study examines how the framing of Indigenous land governance issues—such as resource extraction activities on territory and treaty negotiation—in media differs from that in corporate news. Methods Critical Discourse Analysis were applied to 66 news texts published 2018 large newspapers, such National Post, small outlets, Eagle Feather News. Researchers found connected issues contemporary issues, racism control over child welfare, well historical colonialism Indigenous-Settler relations, while generally excluded any discussion these contextual factors. While main frame press was people not consulted, dominant peoples have already been adequately consulted. Corporate discourse valorized traditional solely based its presumed “economic value.” By contrast, publications offered a counternarrative, one positioned rest natural environment something has absolute value, indivisible all living things, including people.
